Tanzania gets $9m boutique hospital

By SLINDILE KHANYILE, Business Report

African Medical Investments has opened a $9 million (R92 million) 30-bed boutique hospital and well-woman clinic in Tanzania - the first of a number of similar facilities being built across the continent by the company, which is listed on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.

The boutique hospital will be managed and operated by VIP Healthcare Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of African Medical.

Company chairman Phil Edmonds said: "We believe Dar es Salaam is an ideal location to establish a boutique hospital and well-woman clinic, as it has a burgeoning middle class, a large expat business community and only rudimentary … private healthcare facilities. Our overall investment strategy is to capitalise on the growing healthcare market through rapid expansion and creation of further clinics, trauma centres and boutique hospitals across the continent."

The firm is evaluating opportunities in countries including Ghana and Mozambique. It owns the Airport Medical & Travel Vaccination Centre at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport and a trauma centre in Zimbabwe.
