Mauritian, Malagasy consortium to invest $250m in Mozambique’s ethanol sector

Port Louis (Mauritius) A consortium of Mauritian and Malagasy businessmen is finalising plans to invest 250 million dollars in a mega-project in the production of biofuel, APA learnt here.

A communiqué issued by the Mauritian partners in Port Louis on Saturday, said the consortium, the Mozambique Principle Energy (MPC) plans to produce some 213 million litres of ethanol by 2013. The production will be exported to some countries of the region in order to attenuate the energy crisis.

Mozambique has recently approved a ""Right of Use and Exploitation of Land"" concession which will put 18 000 hectares of land at the disposal of the consortium in Dombe, Manica in the central Mozambique.

Sugar cane will be cultivated for the production of bio-fuel. The company which expects to produce 2.5 million tons of sugar cane yearly and will also set up an electrical power station to generate 82.2 megawatts of electricity as from 2012.

Twenty percent of the production will be used by the company and the rest will be supplied to the national grid. An estimated 2 650 jobs will be created and the consortium will help in infrastructural development in the region.
