Angola: Opening of Medicine Factory to Reduce Imports

The Angolan Health minister, José Van-Dúnem, Thursday in Luanda stated that the opening of the medicine factory "NovaAngomédica" will reduce the country's global dependence on import of medicines.

José Van-Dúnem made these statements to the press at the end of the visit paid by the Angolan Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, to the factory aimed at assessing the progress of rehabilitation and modernisation works of Angomédica.

According to the minister, Angola imports currently all kinds of medicines, but in the future the country will buy only the medicines that the new factory will not be able to manufacture.

"In addition to the manufacture of medicines countrywide, the opening of the NovaAngomédica will also ensure the employment of new professionals of pharmaceutical industry at job market", explained the minister.

José Van-Dúnem also said that the strategy of the NovaAngomédica is to produce medicines which the national market absorbs for combat against the most frequent diseases in Angola.

However, president José Eduardo dos Santos made assessment visit to the new medicine plant and went through various sections of the medicines company.

The reconstruction and modernisation works of the factory, set to open in 2009, started in 2004 and it was initially scheduled to be handed over next November.
