The SADC and its Relations to the European Union - Deepening Integration in Southern Africa?

Looking at the African continent it is indeed striking that the idea of regional integration is widespread. A total of 14 Inter-Governmental Organizations have developed in Africa to deal with regional integration issues.

The multitude of Regional Integration Initiatives (RIIs) however has resulted in a prevalence of overlapping memberships. Only six African states belong to one RII exclusively.

Accordingly it is no surprise that Southern Africa is covered by at least three partly intersecting RIIs:
  • The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)
  • The Southern African Development Community (SADC)
  • The Southern African Customs Union (SACU)
