New energy-saving assembly facility for Nigeria

UK-based Freeplay Energy and Zinox Technologies will launch an assembly plant, producing energy efficient communications and lighting equipment, which is expected to reduce Nigeria's dependence on electric power.

Freeplay Energy CEO David Floyd said that the plant would employ thousands of Nigerians, and was expected to deploy millions of energy conserving products across Africa, where it was estimated that over 600-million people did not have access to stable electricity supply.

He said that population explosion has increased the strain on existing but insufficient infrastructure, making the production of energy saving products mandatory.

"Our exclusive partnership with the digital accessories division of Zinox Technologies is to build a plant that will assemble these globally certified products in Nigeria and distribute to other countries in Africa - except South Africa. We are partnering with Zinox because of its passion to develop Africa and its reputation outside Nigeria as a company to trust," said Floyd.

Freeplay Energy is currently in partnership with Unicef, USAid and a number of other development agencies to take its products to less developed communities, including rural communities in Nairobi, Kenya, and New Delhi, in India.

The product range included the Indigo Lantern, the Kito Lantern, the Eyemax Radio and the Jonta Flashlights, which were designed to perform despite tough conditions.

“This will help to usher in a new culture of energy conservation in a country where security lights are left on 24/7, adding to that, candles and paraffin lamps are extremely hazardous to health, often messy, as well as expensive to maintain,” said Zinox executive director Vivian Abii.
